As you progress in your career, your insurance needs may change. From residency to retirement, the AAO-Endorsed Insurance Program, administered by Lockton Affinity, provides access to a variety of insurance policies that can help safeguard you, your family and your practice throughout it all.

You choose to go into orthodontics

According to a Student Loan Survey conducted by the AAO, the average student loan debt between 2008 and 2017 for an orthodontic resident was $418,722—a number that continues to rise.

Because of the cost of an orthodontic education, many residents turn to disability and life insurance to help protect their investment, knowledge and loved ones.

The AAO-Endorsed Insurance Program difference: AAO resident members have access to Student Group Disability and Term Life insurance at no cost. Plus, it takes only minutes to activate coverage.

Upon graduation, the complimentary Student Group Disability and Term Life coverage will expire. AAO members can remain covered by converting complimentary coverage to the Group Disability Income insurance and Group Term Life insurance.

You join the workforce

Recently graduated? It’s good to consider what would happen if something threated your life or caused you to become disabled. Could you or your family members pay your bills and students loans?

To protect against these scenarios, many secure disability, life and critical illness insurance to help protect future income and loved ones.

Disability insurance helps secure a portion of income, typically 60 percent, should you experience an illness or injury that leaves you unable to work.

Life insurance helps ensure your family’s well-being should you die unexpectedly.

Critical illness insurance can help alleviate the financial burdens of serious illnesses like cancer, heart attack or stroke.

The AAO-Endorsed Insurance Program difference: Through your AAO membership, you have access to Group Disability Income Insurance, Group Level Term Life insurance, Group Term Life insurance and Group Critical Illness insurance.

These policies are designed specifically for orthodontists and offer unique benefits:

  • Group Disability Income insurance* offers an own-occupation definition that helps protect your income if a covered illness or injury leaves you unable to work as an orthodontist, even if you are working in another occupation.
  • Group Level Term Life insurance* offers a set premium rate for the initial 10 or 20 year-term you select. If you are still an eligible member at the end of a selected year term, your coverage can automatically be renewed. If coverage is automatically renewed, your premiums are not guaranteed and are based on your current age, which will increase as you age.
  • Group Term Life insurance* offers an inflation guard that allows you to increase your coverage amount to help ensure your coverage keeps pace with inflation.
  • Group Critical Illness insurance* offers coverage without physical exams or medical tests, just answer a few health questions.

You open your own practice

If you choose to open your own practice, there are additional policies for your business:

  • Business Overhead Expense*—Like Group Disability Income insurance helps protect your income in the event of a disability, Business Overhead Expense insurance helps protect your personal assets by paying for business expenses like rent, employee salaries and more during a disability.
  • BOP—A business owners policy (BOP) combines several important policies into one convenient package. Often, BOPs include property, general liability and business interruption insurance.
  • Cyber Liability— As a business owner, you have a responsibility to protect
your business records and your patients’ personal information. Cyber liability insurance helps cover the high costs that come from any theft or breach of patient data.
  • Workers’ Compensation—Legally required in most states, your practice could face legal consequences for noncompliance without workers’ compensation coverage. Lack of coverage also places your business and personal assets at risk in the event of work-related injury or illness.

The AAO-Endorsed Insurance Program difference: Lockton Affinity offers these policies and more for AAO members. From the very beginning, this program was developed with hands-on involvement by the AAO and orthodontists to help ensure the right policies and benefits were offered.
