AAO-Endorsed Insurance Program Student Coverage FAQs

  • What is the difference between Group Student Disability insurance and Group Disability Income insurance?

Both policies help protect your income or future income if you become totally disabled and a covered illness or injury leaves you unable to work as an orthodontist.

With the Group Student Disability policy, you can receive up to $2,000 per month, should you become disabled. This Group Student Disability Insurance policy will also pay up to $200,000 towards your student loans, should you become permanently disabled while in school and under age 45.

Once you graduate, you can convert to the Group Disability Income policy that offers coverage amounts from $500 to $15,000 per month, not to exceed 60% of your average monthly income.

  • What is the difference between Student Term Life insurance and Group Level Term Life insurance?

To help ensure your family’s financial well-being or to cover outstanding debts should something happen to you, many professionals turn to life insurance.

As a resident you have access to a complimentary Student Life insurance policy that offers a $100,000 benefit.

Once you graduate, you have access to Group Level Term Life insurance and Group Term Life insurance. Group Level Term Life Insurance can be best for longer term needs, as your premium remains constant for the initial 10- or 20-year term. If still an eligible member at end of selected year term, your coverage can automatically be renewed. If coverage is automatically renewed, your premiums are not guaranteed, are based on your then current age, and will increase as you reach a higher age.

Group Term Life Insurance is often best for young individuals who wish to cover short-term debts, such as a business loan or mortgage, as coverage is more flexible early on. Premiums will increase gradually at first and more rapidly as you get older.

Both options offer benefit limits up to $3,000,000.

  • Why do I need this coverage as a resident?

According to the organization, Student Loan Planner, the average orthodontist has $597,000 in debt in 2022. Because of the investment you have made in your education, insurance can help protect your education, knowledge and loved ones.

While unlikely, if you become disabled or die while in school, your life and your family’s lives could be greatly affected. Could you or your family members pay your bills and students loans without your income as an orthodontist? These policies can help protect you and your family.

  • What does coverage cost for residents?

With your AAO membership, you can become covered under two important group insurance policies at no cost to you— Group Student Disability coverage and Student Term Life coverage. AAO picks up the tab to support student members like you.
